Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old accused of the brazen murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has enlisted the same New York prison consultant who previously worked with disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein.

The consultant, Craig Rothfeld, now represents two high-profile individuals involved in criminal cases, thanks to his “comprehensive first-hand understanding of the NYC Department of Correction and the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision,” as stated on his website.
Rothfeld himself was once convicted of swindling investors out of $11 million during his tenure as an executive at a now-defunct Wall Street trading firm.
After serving his time, he became a prominent consultant for defendants navigating the criminal justice system, from indictment through to sentencing.
Mangione has also recruited high-profile attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo, who currently represents disgraced rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs.
Rothfeld shared a grim account of his conversation with Weinstein, who shifted from wearing tailored suits to shackles following his conviction on multiple sex crimes in New York and California associated with his role in the production industry.
“I’m discussing the initial 90 days … They’re incredibly dark. They’re very unsettling because you’re transported in handcuffs and leg shackles. There’s no way to receive packages. It’s terrifying. You feel utterly powerless,” he recounted.
Weinstein was previously held at the notorious Rikers Island while awaiting a retrial related to the sexual offenses. He has since been transferred to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan due to an “alarming blood test result requiring urgent medical attention,” as per his attorney, Imran Ansari.
“It is anticipated that he will remain there until his health stabilizes,” he added.
In the meantime, Mangione faces life imprisonment due to various state and federal charges including first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism, interstate stalking leading to death, and one count of using a firearm with a silencer.
“Brian Thompson was executed in cold blood while walking in midtown Manhattan. The alleged motive for his murder was simply his position as the CEO of a health insurance company. As claimed, Luigi Mangione went to New York to stalk and shoot Thompson in broad daylight in front of a Manhattan hotel, in a grotesquely misguided effort to project his views nationwide,” stated Edward Y. Kim, Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
“This wasn’t a debate; it was murder, and Mangione now faces federal charges. This Office, together with its law enforcement partners, will continue to combat violence in all its forms,” he emphasized.
