Magnitude 7.6 Earthquake Hits Near Cayman Islands, Sparks Tsunami Warnings – One America News Network

A 7.6 magnitude earthquake has been reported near the Cayman Islands, prompting a tsunami warning.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a 7.6 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Caribbean Sea, southwest of the Cayman Islands on Saturday.
Several Caribbean nations, including Honduras, have advised coastal residents to evacuate inland or steer clear of beaches as a precaution against a tsunami.
The quake was recorded at 6:23 p.m. local time, with its depth noted at 10 kilometers. The epicenter was located about 130 miles (209 kilometers) southwest of George Town, Cayman Islands.
The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami advisory for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
There is no threat of a tsunami for the U.S. Gulf or East coastlines, and there have been no reports of damage in Honduras or the Cayman Islands.
The Cayman Islands government has also issued a tsunami threat alert, advising residents living near the coast to move inland.
When a tsunami advisory is issued, it is recommended that residents avoid coastal areas and relocate further inland. Tsunami waves between 1 to 3 feet are expected in regions under advisory.
The International Tsunami Information Center has warned that “hazardous tsunami waves due to this earthquake are possible in the next three hours along some coasts of” Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Cuba, Mexico, Honduras, Bahamas, Haiti, Turks and Caicos, San Andres Providence, Belize, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Panama, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, and Saba.
