Lochel’s Bakery, a popular suburban bakery in Pennsylvania known for its “cookie poll” has former President Donald Trump winning by a ratio of 14 to 1.

In terms of the upcoming presidential election, Pennsylvania is considered a key battleground state, also known as a “swing state.”
“Swing states have populations that are closely-divided politically. They have swung back and forth between Democratic and Republican candidates in recent years. They are the battleground states that candidates will target with campaign visits, advertising and staffing,” according to the U.S. Embassy.
The bakery’s cookie poll has accurately predicted the last three elections, except for the U.S. 2020 election, when President Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump.
The cookie poll, which this year features “Harris 2024” cookies with blue sprinkles and “Trump 2024” cookies with red sprinkles, started in 2008 during election season as a fun gimmick that has now grown into a widely popular attraction, with people ordering shipments online, and even driving hours to purchase their favorite candidate’s cookies in person.
“Due to the overwhelming response to the AP (associated press) story on cookies , the cookies are SOLD OUT online CURRENTLY. Once we process the orders we received today and get the couple hundred orders left from last week out we will open up shipping again. We do anticipate a week or so then the cookies will be available again by shipping,” the business owner, Kathleen Lochel, posted on Facebook on September 25th.
As of Tuesday, Trump is currently leading Harris in the cookie poll, reportedly with 12,558 cookies sold to Harris’s 889.
Kathy Lochel, the owner of the bakery, stated that the cookie sales exploded during the 2020 election, bringing customers from hundreds of miles away just to purchase a cookie representing their political candidate.
“It’s just a fun, non-stressful tally that we’re doing,” she stated. “It’s definitely not scientific. It’s just a delicious way I say to take the pressure off with what is going on with the election, all the ads, all the campaign stuff, just a cookie.”
Nevertheless, the cookie sales are “raking in the dough” even more this year than they were back in 2020, prompting a number of customers to be placed on back orders as they await their highly anticipated batch of 2024 election cookies.
“These cookies are being shipped all over the United States right now, so much so that they’re on back order, so we’re about three to four weeks back,” Lochel continued.
The location of the bakery in the key battleground state also drives sales, as both candidates are still looking for the state’s support.
“The people that are coming into our store, whether they’re buying red or blue cookies, they’re friendly, they joke, they laugh, they buy other things,” Lochel added.
Helene Moran, a local, recounted her experience purchasing the cookies on her 82nd birthday, joined by her daughter and son-in-law. She said that they enjoy purchasing the cookies “whenever Trump is up for election… He’s my sweetheart, I love him so much.”
