Mark Esper Warns of Growing Tensions with China and the US
Former Defense Secretary Mark Esper recently cautioned about the growing tension with China, describing it as a “cool war” fueled by escalating economic and political competitions with the United States.
Speaking at the SALT conference in New York City, Esper emphasized the need for American officials to take on a global leadership role rather than shying away from their responsibilities.
“We are beginning to realize the strategic threat that China poses to us,” Esper stated. “I anticipate a strategic decoupling in high-end areas like semiconductors, which is already in motion.”
He commended President Joe Biden for his policies towards China and other Asian countries, though he expressed dissatisfaction with Biden’s handling of the situation in Ukraine.
Esper also drew parallels between Russia and China in their pursuit of power within their respective regions, emphasizing the threat posed by autocracies to weaker neighboring democracies.
Reflecting on his previous role under former President Donald Trump, Esper indicated that while he may not be enthusiastic about voting for Biden, he is certain that he will not be voting for Trump in the upcoming election.
