Matthew Whitaker tells Newsmax that Trump’s fines are ‘Barbaric and Inhumane Treatment’

Former acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker stated on Newsmax Sunday that the significant fines and interest accumulating against former President Donald Trump in his civil case in New York may constitute an Eighth Amendment violation due to the large amounts involved.

Whitaker pointed out the principles of no excessive fines and no cruel and unusual punishments as set forth in the Eighth Amendment, highlighting New York Attorney General Letitia James’ motivations for bringing the case against Trump.

He emphasized that the case appears to be a campaign promise by James and a vindictive effort to push Trump and his companies out of the state, echoing concerns about government power against citizens expressed by the Founding Fathers.

Regarding the interest accumulating on the fines in the case, Whitaker mentioned that James has been publicizing the growing amount on social media, but he believes the Supreme Court will likely reduce the fine due to the absence of any victims in the case.

Whitaker also discussed the ongoing legal battles in Florida concerning classified documents and presidential immunity, predicting that the Supreme Court will rule in Trump’s favor and affirm the importance of presidential immunity for the effective functioning of the presidency.

He further noted that the timing of the legal cases against Trump suggests an attempt to secure a criminal conviction before the November general election, with a particular emphasis on the efforts of special counsel Jack Smith to achieve this outcome. Whitaker emphasized the importance of upholding Trump’s constitutional rights throughout these legal proceedings.
