Mayor Johnson of Chicago Expresses Confidence That City Will Remain Peaceful During DNC
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson emphasized that ensuring safety is a top priority for the Democratic National Convention in August, addressing concerns about potential riots reminiscent of those in 1968.
During an interview with Al Sharpton on MSNBC, Johnson, a Democrat, reassured the public that Chicago is prepared to host a lively and orderly convention.
“My vision for this convention is to guarantee a peaceful yet energetic and vibrant atmosphere. I am confident that Chicago will showcase its beauty and spirit,” Johnson stated.
“I firmly believe that we will have a peaceful, safe, lively, vibrant convention that will support President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in their efforts to continue serving the country.”
Given the similarities to the events of 1968, some party members are apprehensive. Large anti-war protests earlier this year led to significant disruptions on numerous college campuses. As reported by the Associated Press, over 2,800 individuals have been arrested on 50 college campuses across 26 states since April 18. Demonstrations have taken place at more than 400 colleges.
During the Vietnam War era, thousands of protesters gathered at the DNC in Chicago, resulting in hundreds of injuries and 668 arrests. Former Commerce Secretary William M. Daley, a member of a prominent political family in Chicago, noted to Politico: “The mayor controls the streets, but the party controls the inside. The conduct inside the convention reflects on our party.”
Daley highlighted how the chaos during the convention influenced public perception, with iconic newscaster Walter Cronkite calling the floor managers “a bunch of thugs” on live television.
Mayor Johnson has a background in leading protests and believes his experience has prepared him for the DNC.
“I have led numerous demonstrations and understand the importance of expressing political beliefs to influence the government. That’s why I am mayor,” he explained.
Alderman Brian Hopkins, a Democrat from Chicago, expressed confidence in Johnson’s ability to balance the need for peaceful protests with ensuring community safety.
“He understands and empathizes with those who advocate for their causes on the streets. However, he also aims to host an event that showcases the city in a positive light,” Hopkins stated. “We want an event that we can be proud of, where there are no injuries, property damage, or fires.”
