McConnell’s Successor: Why Trump’s Endorsement Matters for the Senate GOP Leader

Former President Donald Trump commented on Sen. Mitch McConnell’s announcement that he will be stepping down as Senate minority leader, stating that there are many good candidates but choosing not to name any specific ones.

During a speech in Eagle Pass, Texas, where he addressed the crisis at the U.S. southern border, Trump was asked about McConnell’s decision. McConnell, 82, surprised many with his announcement to step down after nearly 17 years as the Senate’s top Republican.

Trump remarked, “I hear he’s not going to be leader, and he has taken that step. And a lot of people are calling me to politic for that particular job,” as he remains a front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination.

Turning to Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Trump playfully asked, “Would you like to be the leader? I might have to choose this guy.”

Abbott replied, “I’d rather be governor of Texas,” to which Trump responded, “I think you’re doing well. I want to keep you in Texas.”

Despite past disagreements, Trump acknowledged McConnell’s assistance in various matters, including blocking the appointment of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court and reshaping the federal judiciary. Trump expressed confidence that a great leader would emerge to replace McConnell, mentioning that there are many good choices.

Reports from Politico suggest that Trump is encouraging Sen. Steve Daines of Montana to run as a replacement for McConnell, with other potential candidates including Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, and Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming.
