Meeting Between Speaker Johnson and Jewish Students at Columbia University
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is scheduled to meet with Jewish students at Columbia University on Wednesday afternoon. Following the meeting, he will hold a press conference addressing the increase in antisemitism on college campuses.
The meeting with students will be closed to the press.
Johnson’s visit comes after a series of anti-Israel protests in the city over the past few days, resulting in multiple arrests at both Columbia and New York University.
While President Joe Biden and members of his administration have denounced the antisemitic protests, they have yet to visit New York to meet with Jewish students in person.
Biden, however, has criticized individuals who fail to understand the situation with the Palestinians, despite the ongoing threat facing Jewish students at American universities.
Former President Donald Trump rebuked Biden for lacking compassion and sending the wrong message, tone, and words in response to the situation.
Due to the inability to ensure the safety of Jewish students, Columbia University has decided to offer hybrid classes for the remainder of the semester.
