Meijer, Trump Impeachment Supporter, Suspends Michigan Senate Campaign
Former Michigan Republican Rep. Peter Meijer recently announced the suspension of his Senate campaign due to insufficient support.
Meiijer shared on Twitter, “After prayerful consideration, today I withdrew my name from the primary ballot.”
He explained, “Without a strong pathway to victory, continuing this campaign only increases the likelihood of a divisive primary that would distract from the essential goal – conservative victories in November.”
Meijer, who has been campaigning since November to replace Democrat Sen. Debbie Stabenow, expressed gratitude for the support received and the experiences gained on the campaign trail.
As one of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump in 2021, Meijer faced challenges during his campaign, including clashes with the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC).
The NRSC had shown preference towards former Rep. Mike Rogers, prompting criticism from Meijer regarding D.C. Republicans’ reluctance to support a candidate willing to challenge the status quo.
Following the end of Meijer’s campaign, Trump praised the outcome on Truth Social, expressing support for Rogers as a strong candidate for the nomination.
