On Saturday, President Donald Trump and Melania hosted the National Governors Association dinner at the White House, where he acknowledged his wife’s efforts.
“We start by expressing our gratitude to the First Lady of the United States for hosting the dinner. She put in a lot of effort to ensure everything was magnificent, and she excels at that. Thank you very much,” he stated.
During his address, Trump reassured the audience of his willingness to collaborate across party lines to address the country’s challenges.
“My [phone] number, write it in your wallets and keep it on you because I’m open to anyone—Republican or Democrat. If you need assistance, just call me up, and we will handle it,” Trump quipped, eliciting laughs from the audience.
Melania has been noticeably absent from several foreign leader visits during Trump’s initial weeks in office, as she has mentioned her intention to split her time between the capital, New York City—where their son Barron is a freshman at New York University—and South Florida.
In a January 13th interview with Fox News’ Ainsley Earhardt, Melania noted, “I will be in the White House. And, you know, when I need to be in New York, I will be in New York. When I need to be in Palm Beach, I will be in Palm Beach.”
“But my primary focus is to be a mom, to fulfill my role as a first lady, and as a wife, and once we are in on January 20, my commitment is to serve the nation,” she asserted.
