Meta has officially declared the immediate discontinuation of all diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, aligning itself with other major corporations that are scaling back similar policies.

The news was initially reported by Axios, which referred to a memo sent to Meta employees indicating that the company would halt all DEI programs related to hiring, training, and supplier selection.
In the memo from Meta’s Vice President of Human Resources, Janelle Gale, the company informed employees that the “legal and policy landscape surrounding diversity, equity and inclusion efforts is changing,” as reported by Axios.
Moreover, Gale’s memo pointed to recent Supreme Court decisions that indicate a shift in how courts may handle DEI issues, which is part of the reason for this change.
“The term ‘DEI’ has also become contentious, as it is perceived by some as advocating preferential treatment for specific groups,” Gale stated in the memo, according to Axios.
Meta’s new Chief Global Affairs Officer, Joel Kaplan, shared with Fox News Digital’s Brooke Singman: “This is fundamentally about prioritizing what’s best for our business while ensuring that we serve everyone and recruit the most talented individuals.”
“This entails assessing individuals as unique candidates and sourcing from a diverse array of candidate pools, while refraining from making hiring decisions based on protected characteristics such as race or gender,” Kaplan elaborated.
“The US Supreme Court has recently issued rulings that indicate a shift in the judicial approach to DEI,” Kaplan continued. “This reinforces the principle that discrimination based on inherent traits should not be tolerated or endorsed.”
“It is evident there is a transition occurring regarding this matter from a policy and legal standpoint, and we expect this trend to continue, necessitating that our programs are positioned for long-term sustainability,” he added.
This latest development from Meta comes on the heels of their announcement earlier this week about discontinuing the “fact-checker” feature, transitioning to a model akin to X’s Community Notes. CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasized that the platform will depend on community notes for verifying user-generated content, similar to the approach used by Elon Musk’s platform.
In recent months, several other leading corporations, including McDonald’s, Walmart, Ford Motor Co., John Deere, Lowe’s, and Toyota, have also begun retracting their DEI policies.
