Michael Bloomberg Urges Federal Employees to Return to the Office
Michael Bloomberg is calling on President Biden to require federal workers to return to the office. Despite Biden’s promise in 2022 that the majority of federal workers would work in person again, a recent review found that only 20% have returned to office headquarters. Bloomberg argues that the lack of in-person supervision is negatively impacting the services provided by federal agencies such as the Social Security Administration and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Bloomberg emphasizes the burden this puts on small businesses and residents who rely on these services. D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser has also expressed concern about the absence of federal workers in the city. Despite the Biden administration’s guidance to encourage workers to return, there have been no firm targets or timelines set. Bloomberg argues that the pandemic is over and excuses for allowing offices to remain empty should end. He points to the benefits of hybrid work but highlights the importance of face-to-face supervision and mentoring. He suggests that the federal government should lead by example and that the president should fulfill his promise to bring workers back to the office.
