On Tuesday, Peters (D-Mich.), who spearheaded the Democratic campaign efforts in the last two election cycles, announced his decision to refrain from campaigning for a third term.
“Our founding fathers envisioned members of Congress as citizens serving their country for a few terms and then returning to private life. I share this belief,” Peters stated in a recorded message. “After serving three terms in the House and two terms in the Senate, I think it’s time for me to pen a few more pages in my current chapter and hand over the reins. Therefore, I will not pursue reelection in 2026.”
At 66, Peters previously served as chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in 2022, during which time Democrats maintained all their swing district holdings and gained a seat in Pennsylvania.
However, in the following 2024 election, Democrats faced setbacks, losing four seats in Pennsylvania, Montana, Ohio, and West Virginia.
Among the potential successors to Peters’ seat are Pete Buttigieg, who served as President Biden’s U.S. transportation secretary and has recently relocated to Michigan, and state Senator Mallory McMorrow, a Democrat recognized for her impactful viral speech on the Senate floor in 2022.
