Mike Johnson relocates to sanction the International Criminal Court

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is expected to call for a vote this week on a legislation aimed at sanctioning the International Criminal Court for pursuing arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes, as reported by Politico on Tuesday.

Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, and House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., introduced legislation earlier this month that would enforce sanctions against the ICC and its employees investigating or prosecuting the U.S. or its allies.

ICC prosecutor Karim Khan announced Monday the charges against Netanyahu and Gallant, accusing them of “causing extermination, causing starvation as a method of war, including the denial of humanitarian relief supplies, and deliberately targeting civilians in conflict.”

While Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., publicly criticized the ICC, many Democratic members are undecided on the issue, according to Politico. Johnson and the GOP caucus aim to solidify their position with a vote.

The House bill proposes to revoke the visas of any ICC employee or associate participating in the investigation or prosecution of current or former U.S. soldiers or officials, as well as officials or troops of U.S. allies.

It also includes revoking visas of all ICC employees, individuals acting on behalf of the ICC, and the immediate family members of those involved in investigating U.S. and allied troops and officials.
