Minnesota Senator Tina Smith announced on Thursday her decision not to pursue re-election in 2026, creating an opportunity for former Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz.

Walz, recently concluded with his unsuccessful VP campaign in 2024, is reportedly considering a bid for Smith’s seat, as noted by Politico. Furthermore, he may also run for re-election as Governor in 2026.
Smith’s announcement poses challenges for Democrats in their effort to reclaim Senate control, currently held by Republicans with a 53-47 majority. Her retirement removes an incumbent from the equation as they recruit candidates in more challenging states.
The 66-year-old Smith cited the desire to spend more time with her family after 20 years of public service as the reason for her departure.
“This decision is not political. It is entirely personal,” Smith stated. “However, it is not lost on me that our country requires strong, progressive leadership more than ever.”
This news also follows the retirement announcement of Senator Gary Peters (D-Mich.) at the end of the previous month.
“I cherish Minnesota, and I plan to run for U.S. Senate to continue serving the people of this state. A formal announcement will come later this month. For now, I am engaging with community members, family, and friends,” Flanagan expressed in a statement on X.
Possible contenders eyeing the open seat include Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison; Democratic Representatives Angie Craig, Kelly Morrison, and Ilhan Omar; former 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Dean Phillips; and St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter, as highlighted by The New York Times.
