Mississippi Inmate Recaptured After Christmas Eve Escape – One America News Network

A convicted murderer who fled from a Mississippi state prison on Christmas Eve has been recaptured, as reported by the Mississippi Department of Corrections on Facebook.

Drew Johnson was apprehended in the vicinity of the prison, according to the post.
Johnson had received a life sentence on Valentine’s Day in 2022. He managed to escape from Mississippi’s newest state prison in Greene County nearly three years later on Christmas Eve, as stated by the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
Authorities in the Magnolia State labeled Johnson as “desperate” and “extremely dangerous.”
“Notify your family and keep them informed. Send them messages and expect responses,” warned the George County Sheriff’s Department regarding the prison escape in a Facebook post. “During Christmas, people often let their guard down. Stay alert and exercise caution.”
This captured murderer has a history of violent crime across several states. In 2022, he pleaded guilty to multiple violent offenses, according to a news release from Tennessee’s Shelby District Attorney’s Office. Johnson fatally stabbed an acquaintance over two dozen times in 2016 and then left the victim’s body in a field in southwest Memphis.
While incarcerated in 2021, Johnson assaulted another inmate, repeatedly striking him in the head with a brick, as noted by the district attorney’s office. He also admitted to starting several fires in 2019.
Consequently, Johnson received a life sentence without the possibility of parole for murder, in addition to 15-year sentences for each of his other violent crimes, all to run concurrently, as per the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office.
Moreover, he faces a pending murder charge in Rankin County, Mississippi.
Johnson escaped from the South Mississippi Correctional Institution in Leakesville on Tuesday around 3:30 PM, according to an alert from the Greene County Emergency Management Office.
