Missouri Senator Schmitt criticizes Trump verdict as a ‘travesty’ of the rule of law
Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., a former Missouri attorney general, expressed his disappointment on Thursday regarding former President Donald Trump’s guilty verdict in his New York criminal trial. Schmitt described the verdict as a “travesty” for the rule of law and the Constitution.
Earlier in the day, Trump made history as the first former president to be convicted of felony crimes in Manhattan. The jury found him guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal a $130,00 payment made by his former attorney Michael Cohen to adult film star Stormy Daniels.
In a statement obtained by Newsmax, Schmitt stated, “What transpired in New York represents a travesty for the rule of law and our Constitution. Democrats have weaponized the judicial process against President Trump, turning it into a Soviet-style show trial of Joe Biden’s main political opponent. This has greatly devalued the American judicial system.”
Schmitt added, “President Trump will find justice on appeal, and the American people will reject this unprecedented manipulation of the law in the upcoming November elections.”
