A new poll by Morning Consult suggests that more people are perceiving former President Donald Trump as electable following the release of his mug shot from his arrest in Georgia and his decision to skip the first GOP primary debate. According to the poll, 62% of at least 777 Republican potential primary voters believe Trump has the best chance of defeating President Joe Biden. This is a 9% increase from the previous poll and corresponds to the highest point since April. Trump’s numbers have risen after being indicted in state and federal cases. In contrast, the poll shows decreasing support for Trump’s rivals, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. DeSantis was considered the best choice by 13%, matching a low number for the poll, while 6% said Ramaswamy is the best choice against Biden, dropping by 4 points since the last poll. The poll also reveals unfavorability ratings for certain candidates before and after the debate.
