Most Congressional Republicans Support Trump

Former President Donald Trump secured the endorsements of a majority of Republicans in Congress, Politico reported.

Rep. Julia Letlow, R-La., endorsed Trump on Sunday to give Trump the backing of 135 members of Congress as he runs to win the 2024 GOP presidential nomination.

“From the very beginning, President Trump has been both a supporter and a friend,” Letlow told Politico in a statement. “Most recently, President Trump called me asking for my endorsement, and it’s a privilege to support him.”

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., also announced Sunday that he’s endorsing Trump.

“When Trump was in WH I achieved major policies I had worked on for years (like expanded Child Tax Credit & tough sanctions on regime in Cuba & Venezuela) because we had a President who didn’t cave to special interests or let bureaucrats block us,” Rubio wrote on X.

“I support Trump because that kind of leadership is the ONLY way we will get the extraordinary actions needed to fix the disaster [President Joe] Biden has created.”

Rubio’s endorsement means he snubbed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has been battling former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley to become the clear alternative candidate to Trump.

Sen. Jim Risch, R-Idaho, also announced Saturday that he is supporting Trump.

Trump now has the support of 111 House Republicans and 24 GOP senators, Politico reported.

No senators have endorsed DeSantis or Haley. Only five House Republicans have endorsed DeSantis, and one has endorsed Haley.

Brian Jack, Trump’s de facto liaison to Congress who previously served as his White House political director, has managed Trump’s effort to win congressional endorsements.

CNN reported last week that Trump’s advisers informed some Republican lawmakers that they were keeping track of who endorses him pre- and post-Iowa, which holds its caucuses Monday.

CNN added that some congressional Republicans who have endorsed other candidates are being pressured to switch to Trump.

Trump on Friday spoke with Letlow and Rep. Nick Langworthy, R-N.Y., who also endorsed the former president, Politico reported.

Langworthy, a former New York GOP Chairman, served on Trump’s 2016 New York campaign leadership team and then his White House transition committee.

“Those relationships do matter,” Langworthy told Politico.
