Vance’s half-brother, Cory Bowman, is a pastor, coffee shop owner, and registered Republican.
This week, Bowman declared his candidacy for mayor, stating his older half-brother’s inauguration significantly influenced his decision to run, per The Cincinnati Enquirer.
In a recent social media update, Bowman revealed that he has already submitted his petition to run.
“My flight touched down at CVG [airport] weeks ago, after returning from what I believe is the most significant inauguration of my generation. Once I landed, I realized that my beloved city cannot afford to lag behind in the pivotal years to come,” Bowman stated.
“People have warned me, ‘Prepare yourself. They will come after you.’ I’m unsure who ‘they’ are, or if they are even witnessing this, but my passion lies in providing a genuine choice for the people of Cincinnati. A choice that promises years of prosperity, growth, and happiness in our beautiful downtown.”
He emphasized: “Citizens should never grow complacent with the status quo; they deserve the opportunity to shape their own future.”
The last Republican to run for Cincinnati mayor was Brad Wenstrup in 2009, who later went on to successfully campaign for a U.S. House seat.
At present, Cincinnati is governed by an all-Democrat, nine-member council following the removal of Republican Liz Keating in 2023.
According to The Cincinnati Enquirer, eight individuals have filed petitions for the mayoral race. The deadline for submitting the necessary 500 signatures to secure a spot on the ballot is February 20th.
Nevertheless, none of the prospective candidates, including first-term Democratic Mayor Aftab Pureval, have met the requirement so far. Despite this, Pureval confirmed to the publication that he intends to seek re-election.
In the meantime, Bowman noted that he has had conversations with Vance during the early stages of his campaign for the city’s leadership.
“I don’t claim to speak for my brother; he articulates well on his own. He is doing exceptionally,” he remarked, sharing that Vance serves as an inspiration for his political ambitions.
“I can confidently say he is an extraordinary role model for me.”
Both share the same father, Donald Bowman, who placed Vance for adoption when he was in kindergarten.
In his memoir “Hillbilly Elegy”, Vance recounts reuniting with his father and half-siblings, including Cory, during his teenage years.
Vance describes living with his father in their family farmhouse in Preble County, which contrasted with his upbringing with his mother, who struggled with drug addiction.
Currently, Bowman oversees the River Church and owns a coffee establishment named Kings Arms Coffee Roasters, located in Cincinnati’s West End.
“I fell in love with this neighborhood,” he said in reference to his locale.
As of now, Vance has not publicly commented on his half-brother’s campaign announcement.
