MSNBC leader Rashida Jones has announced her exit from the left-leaning network as their viewership continues to decline, just days before President-elect Donald Trump is expected to take office, according to a statement released by the company on Tuesday.

Jones, who has overseen the NBC Universal-owned cable network for the past four years, shared the news of her immediate resignation in a memo to the staff.
“After four remarkable years at the helm of MSNBC and 11 years within NBCU, I have decided to explore new opportunities,” Jones said.
Consequently, she will be temporarily replaced by Rebecca Kutler, the senior vice president of content strategy, according to the company.
Speculations regarding Jones’ departure arose after the parent company, Comcast, announced plans last month to spin off MSNBC along with other cable properties into a new publicly traded entity named SpinCo.
This new entity is set to be led by veteran executive Mark Lazarus.
Moreover, Jones stated that Lazarus has asked her to remain for a few additional months post-announcement to assist in guiding the network through this transitional phase.
Lazarus expressed admiration for Jones, commending her for “skillfully steering MSNBC through an unending and exceptional news cycle, all while driving the network to record ratings and investing in nonlinear ventures.”
“MSNBC is well-prepared for the future, and I am thankful that she will continue to support us during this change,” Lazarus shared in a memo to employees.
Previously, Jones held the position of senior vice president at NBC News and MSNBC, and she was appointed president of the network in February 2021. During her tenure, she propelled MSNBC to become the second-most watched all-news cable channel, trailing only Fox News.
She also sought to broaden the channel’s audience by pursuing live events and investing in streaming initiatives.
Nonetheless, the network has experienced a significant drop in viewership since the presidential election.
As a result, top host Rachel Maddow will resume her role as host for the 9 p.m. ET primetime slot on a full-time basis for at least the first 100 days of the new Trump administration.
