Elon Musk, an advisor to Trump, promoted the idea of free trade between the USA and Europe, aiming to remove tariffs and foster economic bonds.

“Ultimately, I hope we can come to an agreement for both Europe and the United States to progress towards a zero-tariff environment, effectively establishing a free trade zone between Europe and North America,” Musk remarked on Saturday.

Musk also shared his vision for increased mobility between Europe and the United States, saying: “If individuals want to work in Europe or North America, they should have the freedom to do so, in my opinion.”

“That has certainly been my advice to the president,” Musk reiterated.

Musk’s remarks come shortly after President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs affecting multiple countries globally, including a 20% tariff on the European Union due to the bloc’s 39% tariff on the U.S.

The day following the tariff announcement, the S&P index decreased by nearly 5%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 4%, and the Nasdaq dropped by 6%, resulting in a $5 trillion loss in stock market value.

In contrast, President Trump has encouraged Americans to “hang tough,” asserting that the tariffs will “revitalize jobs and businesses to an unprecedented extent.”

“Already, over FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS OF INVESTMENT has been initiated, and is rapidly increasing! THIS IS AN ECONOMIC REVOLUTION, AND WE WILL ACHIEVE SUCCESS. HANG TOUGH, it may be challenging, but the ultimate outcome will be historic. We will MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!” Trump stated on Saturday.

In response, the European Union threatened to respond with countermeasures by mid-April, as the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, promised a reaction.

“Europe is ready to respond. We will always safeguard our interests and values. We’re also open to dialogue and transitioning from confrontation to negotiation,” she declared. “Uncertainty will escalate and provoke an increase in protectionism. The repercussions will be severe for millions globally.”

Additionally, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins noted that President Trump’s tariffs have successfully brought “50 countries” to the negotiation table.

“I believe we will soon see very positive results from this. We currently have 50 nations that have engaged with us in talks over the past few days and weeks, eager to discuss. We are the world’s economic powerhouse, and it’s about time someone, President Trump, stood up for America,” she emphasized. “This initiative is focused on reconstructing an American economy centered around American products and industries.”
