Saturday’s rally will be the first time that Trump will return to the site of the first assassination attempt. Trump’s campaign officially announced the former president’s return last week.
“President Donald J. Trump will return to Butler, Pennsylvania, to hold a rally on the very same ground where he came within a quarter of an inch of losing his life less than three months ago,” the campaign said in a release.
“President Trump’s return to Butler will stand as a tribute to the American spirit. In America, we do not let monsters like that evil assassin have the last word,” the campaign said in a release,” it continued.
Musk, the tech billionaire and owner of X, first endorsed Donald Trump soon after the July assassination attempt.
On July 13th, a 20-year-old shooter attempted to kill the Republican nominee from a rooftop perch that was located around 130 yards away from the rally stage. Miraculously, Trump moved his head at the last second to look at a chart behind him, just barely missing the bullet’s reach. The bullet, meant to pierce him in the head, merely skimmed the upper portion of his right ear. Although a trail of blood from Trump’s ear could be seen by rally onlookers and at-home viewers watching the live rally, Trump came out of the event only slightly injured.
The shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was immediately killed by counter snipers.
Due to the barrage of bullets, Crooks managed to kill and badly injure three other men, Corey Comperatore, David Dutch, and James Copenhaver. Dutch and Copenhaver have since recovered.
However, firefighter Corey Comperatore, 50, the third victim, was fatally shot by Crooks after being struck in the line of fire. The Trump campaign announced that the heroic husband and father “historically sacrificed his life to shield his wife and daughters.”
Trump says that he plans to recognize and honor the men who died or were injured on that grim day.
“He will express his deep gratitude to law enforcement and first responders and thank the entire community for their outpouring of love and support in the wake of the attack,” the campaign noted.
