Pelosi (D-Calif.) declared on Monday that she supports the plan of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) to retain Johnson (R-La.) as Speaker of the House.
“House Republicans are either unwilling or unable to get Marjorie Taylor Greene and extreme MAGA Republicans under control and so it’s going to take a bipartisan coalition and partnership,” said Jeffries.
“[Jeffries] confirmed that members of his own party would vote to support Johnson — a highly unusual move — to prevent a replay of last year’s chaos,” Reuters reported.
Pelosi said that in order to “support the integrity of the House of Representatives and…not let it be littered up by nonsense,” she reiterated that she supports Johnson staying in his position.
“Personally, I respect his authenticity; I disagree with his politics, but that’s okay,” Pelosi said previously about Johnson.
She added: “If you’re just sitting in the back bench, and then they tap you to become the speaker, they shouldn’t complain when you don’t know how to be speaker from day one.”
Meanwhile, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has consistently pushed to have Speaker Johnson removed. Pelosi made the remarks in response to Greene’s request. Greene’s proposal has the support of Representatives Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) and Thomas Massie (R-Ky.).
According to reports, the Speaker informed donors on Sunday that he would back removing certain members from committees who oppose favored legislative agendas. Additionally, he hinted that at the end of the legislative session, he would be in support of altering House rules, such as the motion to vacate.
Massie has enumerated the “three betrayals” of Johnson: In addition to forcing through unwarranted surveillance of Americans and passing a package containing $95 billion in foreign aid without protecting America’s border—something he had vowed would not happen—he has given up on passing the 12 separate appropriations bills.
