Billionaire entrepreneur and Trump ally Elon Musk has recently suggested the United States should reconsider its involvement with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the United Nations.

In a post on X on Saturday evening, MAGA influencer Gunther Eagleman stated, “It’s time to leave NATO and the UN,” which was in reply to a message from Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah).
Musk reacted to Eagleman’s statement with a simple agreement: “I agree.”
The following morning, Musk shared another post on X by Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie, who argued: “NATO is a Cold War relic that should be reduced to a mere talking kiosk at the Smithsonian.”
Moreover, Musk has voiced his doubts regarding the ongoing demands for support in Ukraine, commenting, “The EU leaders and Zelensky having fancy dinners while men die in trenches. How many parents will never see their son again? How many children will never see their father?”
Musk’s perspective on the U.S. potentially exiting NATO and the UN aligns with his role in the Department of Government Efficiency, where discussions have emerged regarding the U.S. committing an excessive amount of resources towards defense for these organizations.
President Trump has yet to unambiguously declare an intention to withdraw from NATO, though he has urged European nations to step up their contributions to defense spending.
Musk’s remarks come on the heels of the Trump administration expressing skepticism about Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky while stating that NATO membership for Ukraine is “unrealistic.”
Recently, Trump argued that NATO’s expansion into Ukraine may have significantly contributed to the onset of the conflict, citing Putin’s warnings since 2008—following the NATO Bucharest Summit—against expanding NATO towards Russia’s borders.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov lauded Trump for his statements regarding NATO expansion into Ukraine.
“He is the first, and so far, in my opinion, the only Western leader who has publicly and loudly said that one of the root causes of the Ukrainian situation was the impudent line of the previous administration to draw Ukraine into NATO,” Lavrov stated.
It remains uncertain whether President Trump will heed Musk’s suggestion to exit these international organizations while the conflict in Ukraine endures for its third year.
