New AP-NORC Poll Reveals Americans’ Divergent Views on Biden’s Student Loan Policies, Including Those in Debt
President Joe Biden often highlights his efforts to address student debt while campaigning for reelection, citing the millions who have received loan forgiveness during his presidency. However, a new poll from the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows that only three in 10 U.S. adults approve of Biden’s handling of the issue.
Among those with student loans, the approval rating is not much higher, with 4 in 10 expressing disapproval. This division persists even among individuals directly affected by student loan debt, with 36% approving of Biden’s actions and 34% disapproving.
The poll also highlights that Biden’s push for student debt relief is not resonating strongly with key demographics, such as young adults and Black and Hispanic Americans. Despite some cancellation efforts and existing programs that have helped around 4 million borrowers, the president faces challenges in gaining support for his plans.
While some, like Asher Marshall, had hoped for more substantial loan forgiveness, others, like Melissa Mata, feel let down by the unfulfilled promises. However, supporters, like Samantha Kempf, acknowledge the obstacles Biden has faced, particularly with the Supreme Court rejecting his initial plan.
The poll further reveals that while about 4 in 10 adults consider federal government intervention on student debt to be important, opinions vary along political lines. Republicans tend to oppose widespread cancellation, arguing against burdening taxpayers with loan repayments, while Democrats generally support relief measures.
Biden’s latest proposal aims to provide debt relief to specific groups, but overall support for these initiatives varies. Democrats are more likely to approve forgiveness efforts compared to Republicans, highlighting the ongoing debate over how best to address the student debt crisis in the United States.
Despite differing opinions on the issue, the poll underscores the importance of student debt relief as a key concern for many Americans, especially younger generations who are more likely to prioritize government action on this front.
The poll was conducted from May 16-21, 2024, and surveyed 1,309 adults. The margin of sampling error for all respondents is plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.
