In a press briefing, Karoline Leavitt, the press secretary appointed by President Donald Trump, stated that the “mysterious” drones observed over New Jersey and other surrounding states had been authorized by the FAA, raising questions about the Pentagon’s assertion of having no information regarding their identity.

The announcement from the Trump administration on Tuesday ensues after the Biden administration’s lack of transparency concerning the origins of these drones heightened public anxiety and sparked conspiracy theories.
“After thorough investigation, we found that the drones flying in large numbers over New Jersey were authorized by the FAA for research purposes and other various reasons. Many drones were operated by hobbyists, recreational flyers, and private individuals. Over time, interest and curiosity grew,” Leavitt explained.
The reports of drone sightings went viral in November, with witnesses describing drones “the size of SUVs.” Many Americans expressed feeling uninformed about the drones’ origins and purpose.
Government officials seemed equally in the dark, as Representative Michael McCaul (R-Texas) noted last December that he suspected the drones to be “adversarial,” given their presence over military installations.
“We are seeking answers, yet the response I’m receiving is ‘we don’t know who owns these drones,’” McCaul remarked. “I was with NASA Administrator, Bill Nelson, and he indicated that these drones have been reported over military sites and bases. I wouldn’t presume those are friendly operations; I’d consider them adversarial.”
“Based on my assessment, I believe the drones over our military sites are adversarial and likely originating from the People’s Republic of China,” he continued. “These appear to be spy drones, and the PRC has shown proficiency in such activities. We know they have purchased land near military bases, consistent with their strategies over the last few years.”
Despite earlier doubts regarding the drones’ origins, Leavitt assured the public that they were “not the enemy.”
Details surrounding the nature of the stated “research,” along with the “various other reasons,” and the identities of the drone operators remain unclear.
On his first day in office, Trump instructed his chief of staff to “immediately” gather more information on these drones, noting, “I can’t picture they are enemies; otherwise, you would see destruction. Perhaps they were testing something. I don’t understand why they would conceal it.”
