New Jersey Mayor Encourages the Left to Emulate DeSantis and Abbott

A political progressive in New Jersey is looking to emulate the conservative red-state GOP governors in Florida and Texas by positioning his blue state as a liberal trendsetter.

“We could serve as a proving ground,” said Ras Baraka, the 10-year mayor of Newark and gubernatorial hopeful, in an interview with Politico. “I believe that the actions we take in New Jersey could have a significant impact on the country, much like Governor Abbott in Texas and Governor DeSantis in Florida.”

“Whether it’s initiatives related to affirmative action, voting rights, or opportunities for the working class, we have the potential to be a model for the rest of the nation.”

Baraka expressed his eagerness to run for governor despite the political challenges and an endorsement process dominated by local leaders. He emphasized the need to break away from traditional politicians and their empty promises.

According to Baraka, addressing housing and healthcare is a top priority as governor. He highlighted the issue of segregation in New Jersey and its impact on housing and education disparities.

Reparations, Baraka noted, will be a key topic of discussion. He acknowledged the lasting effects of historical injustices on communities of color and the need to address systemic barriers to wealth and opportunity.

Baraka expressed confidence that his progressive agenda will resonate with a diverse audience, transcending political affiliations. He criticized lawmakers for avoiding discussions on reparations and the wealth gap, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and community impact.

“I am dedicated to fighting for my community and advocating for meaningful change,” Baraka said. “Ambition should go beyond personal gain and encompass the well-being of all individuals.”
