The New York Times (NYT) delivered a notably different analysis in a report on Tuesday concerning President Joe Biden’s advanced age and perceived cognitive decline, contrasting with prior articles that claimed he was “sharp as a tack” before his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race.

“His verbal missteps are not new, friends recall; he has dealt with a stutter throughout his life and has always been labeled a ‘gaffe machine,’ as he himself describes, long before reaching retirement age. Advisors argue that his judgment remains intact. The phrase ‘sharp as a tack’ is so common among them that it has become somewhat of a mantra,” The Times reported previously.
Now that President Biden is a “lame duck” with no stakes in the game as he approaches the end of his term, the liberal publication has adjusted its narrative, acknowledging that it’s “difficult to imagine that [Biden] genuinely believed he could handle the world’s most demanding job for another four years.”
“This marks the twilight of Mr. Biden’s presidency, the concluding hours of an extensive journey that has been full of unexpected turns. Time is catching up with Mr. Biden,” wrote correspondents Peter Baker and Zolan Kanno-Youngs.
“As time passes, Mr. Biden appears older and moves slower. Aides maintain he remains quite sharp in the Situation Room, communicating with world leaders to negotiate a cease-fire in Lebanon or address the turmoil in Syria. Still, it is hard to picture him believing he could take on the world’s most stressful position for another four years,” the report added.
The article then transitioned to Biden’s recent trip to a rainforest, where he appeared to wander off unexpectedly and had to be called back.
“After delivering a seven-minute speech on a notably humid day, dressed in a loosely fitted blue shirt, he slowly turned to shuffle away along a dirt path, causing audience members unfamiliar with his appearances to hold their breath, concerned he might stumble,” the article stated.
Moreover, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre had previously asserted that certain videos showing President Biden in a seemingly unresponsive state were “cheap fakes,” manipulated to portray him negatively.
However, the public expressed skepticism and humor over Jean-Pierre’s defense following Biden’s notably poor debate performance against Trump.
NYT also sought to support the “cheap fake” argument after Jean-Pierre’s comments, suggesting that the critical videos were either “edited or lacking context” in a June piece titled: “How Misleading Videos Are Trailing Biden As He Battles Age Doubts.”
“Recently, conservative media outlets, the Republican National Committee, and the Trump campaign have circulated videos of Mr. Biden that lacked vital context and misrepresented ordinary moments to cast him in an unfavorable light,” the article noted.
Meanwhile, critics have pointed out the convenient timing of the outlet’s shift regarding Biden’s cognitive condition.
“What a difference 179 days can make for The New York Times. From: ‘videos of Mr. Biden circulating during this year’s campaign are clearly manipulated to make him appear old and confused.’ To: ‘it is hard to imagine that he seriously thought he could do the world’s most stressful job for another four years,’” remarked conservative communications strategist Steve Guest in a post on X.
“Mainstream media is fully complicit in obscuring Joe Biden’s condition. For four years, they defended him and criticized anyone who questioned his cognitive decline,” a commenter stated.
“Hmm, who authorized them to revise their propaganda message?” another added.
