No Expectation of Delay in Trump Hush Money Case, Andrew Napolitano Tells Newsmax
According to former judge Andrew Napolitano in an interview with Newsmax on Monday, the hush money case involving former President Donald Trump in New York is likely to proceed to trial without delay.
Trump’s legal team had previously requested the judge overseeing the case to either delay the trial or dismiss the charges, citing that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office did not provide over 170,000 documents in a timely manner.
Napolitano mentioned, “That’s a significant number of documents that originated from the federal government because the federal prosecutors in lower Manhattan had investigated the same events four years ago and chose not to pursue charges. Alvin Bragg requested a copy of their files.” Napolitano added that Bragg’s office “delayed fulfilling this request for two years and just recently delivered the files, consisting of 110,000 pages, prompting a request for an adjournment of the trial that was initially scheduled for today.”
Napolitano further explained, “The judge granted a 30-day adjournment. During this period, both the prosecutors and defense counsel reviewed the documents. The defense did not raise any issues, and the prosecution confirmed that there was nothing substantial that required further delay. The judge then set a new trial date for today, Monday morning.”
Napolitano anticipated that upon the judge’s arrival in court, there would be arguments between the defense and prosecution regarding their readiness and the commencement of the trial.
Later that day, the judge handling the trial decided to begin the trial on April 15, rejecting the defense’s plea for another delay and affirming that Bragg’s office was not at fault for the delayed production of documents from the U.S. Attorney’s office.
