North Korean leader Kim Jong Un declared his intention to implement the “harshest” policies against the United States just weeks before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Kim’s remarks were made during a five-day conference with the Workers’ Party of Korea, where party officials criticized the U.S. partnership with Japan and South Korea, labeling it a “nuclear military bloc for hostility.”
“This reality clearly indicates the path we must take and the actions we need to undertake,” stated the party, referring to the Western alliance.
Kim called the United States “the most reactionary state that views anti-communism as its unwavering state policy.”
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the party “outlined the strategy for the most stringent counteractions against the U.S. to be executed assertively” by North Korea, although it did not specify the policies associated with this anti-American approach.
During his first term, Trump managed to foster relations with Kim, but they deteriorated due to differences over policy. Experts suggest that Trump may find it more challenging to diplomatically reconnect with North Korea given his focus on the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
North Korea’s involvement in supporting Russia in the Ukraine conflict could further strain its relations with the United States.
Reports indicate that North Korea has dispatched approximately 10,000 troops to assist Russian forces in Ukraine, raising concerns among Western officials that Russia might supply North Korea with resources and technology to enhance its nuclear weapons capabilities.
“We are also deeply worried about the potential transfer of nuclear- or ballistic missile-related technology to the DPRK, which would undermine international non-proliferation efforts and pose risks to peace and stability both on the Korean Peninsula and worldwide,” stated South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell in a joint declaration.
Additionally, Kim’s administration commented via state media on a recent martial law incident in South Korea that led to the impeachment process against President Yoon Suk-Yeoul.
“The shocking situation within the puppet Yoon Suk Yeol regime, which faced a severe governance crisis and an impeachment threat, has abruptly proclaimed a martial law decree and unsparingly wielded the tools of its fascist dictatorship,” according to a KCNA statement.
“The global community is closely observing, with evaluations suggesting that the martial law episode has revealed vulnerabilities within South Korean society … and that the political life of Yoon Suk Yeol may soon come to an end,” the state media added.
