NY Governor’s Migrant Proposal Criticized by Rep. Stefanik
Representative Elise Stefanik criticized Governor Kathy Hochul’s proposal to address the migrant problem in New York, calling it “shameful.” Stefanik argued that providing free housing, healthcare, schooling, and legal services to illegal immigrants would incentivize more illegal immigration. She suggested that instead, Hochul should call on President Biden to secure the borders and pass the Secure the Border Act of 2023. In her letter to Biden, Hochul requested expedited work authorizations, financial assistance, the conversion of federal facilities into temporary shelters, and reimbursement for deploying the National Guard. She highlighted the urgency of the situation and the significant financial burden on the state.
