NY Times Poll Shows Trump’s Margin Shrinks Following Verdict
According to a recent redo of a New York Times/Siena College poll, former President Donald Trump’s lead over President Joe Biden has decreased slightly following Trump’s guilty verdict in a New York criminal trial last week.
The recontact study in June, which reinterviewed 1,897 registered voters on June 3-4 after the guilty verdict, showed that Trump’s lead had narrowed. Trump previously held a three-point lead over Biden in the poll conducted from April 7 to May 9.
In the initial poll, Trump had 41% to Biden’s 38%, but the new poll now shows Trump at 42% and Biden at 40%.
The shift in polling numbers was most noticeable among younger, nonwhite, and less engaged Democratic voters. The poll revealed that 20% of Black supporters of Trump in the first poll now support Biden, while 2% of non-Black previous Trump supporters have switched to Biden.
The findings also showed that 46% of respondents approved of the guilty verdict, with 33% disapproving and 16% indicating they did not know enough to form an opinion.
Additionally, the poll indicated that Trump retained 93% of voters who previously stated they were voting for him in the April/May survey. 3% have shifted to supporting Biden, while 4% remain undecided.
Other polls released after the verdict have shown similar trends, as reported by Politico. A Morning Consult poll indicated that Biden gained three percentage points to reach 45%, while Trump’s support remained at 44%. An Emerson College poll released on Thursday showed that Trump’s support has remained consistent since April.
