NYC Mayor Requests Governor Hochul to Settle Migrants Within New York State
New York City Mayor Eric Adams wants New York Governor Kathy Hochul to use an executive order to distribute migrants to suburban and upstate communities and provide the city with $6.5 billion in aid. Adams has recommended several state-controlled locations for temporary shelters. The city is facing a growing crisis as over 100,000 migrants have arrived since spring 2022, with numbers expected to double by June 2024. The estimated costs for handling this crisis are projected to be $12 billion over the next three years. The New York National Guard has been deployed to support city-run shelters, and the state has allocated $1.5 billion for migrant support. New York’s U.S. House Republicans have criticized Hochul and Adams for awarding “no-bid” emergency contracts worth $1.6 billion to address the migrant crisis.
