The iconic crystal ball poised to descend in New York City’s Times Square this New Year’s Eve was revealed just days before the festive occasion, with rapper Pitbull present for the preparatory test.

Friday marked the installation of the final crystal triangles on the 11,875-pound ball, a significant moment as it was the first time in a decade that all 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles were replaced at once.
Among those present for the final assembly atop One Times Square were rapper Pitbull and inventor Joy Mangano, symbolizing the countdown to the New Year.
After this year’s countdown, the ball is expected to be retired, making way for a new design in 2025.
“The new ball will debut in 2025, featuring a completely fresh design that is both dynamic and significantly more digitally interactive,” remarked Michael Phillips, president of the company that owns One Times Square.
“This ball will then be displayed in the building’s lower levels as part of an immersive arts and culture experience,” he further explained.
The inaugural ball drop in Times Square occurred in 1907, conceived by Jacob Starr, an immigrant metalworker who crafted a large iron and wood ball decorated with 100 25-watt light bulbs.
Since then, the only instances where the ball drop did not take place were in 1942 and 1943, due to a city-wide “dimout” during World War II, where the public observed a moment of silence instead, accompanied by chimes from One Times Square.
This year’s celebration will be hosted by Ryan Seacrest for the “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” program, featuring performances from stars such as Carrie Underwood, Blake Shelton, and Lenny Kravitz, among others.
