NYPD’s Chell Speaking to Newsmax: Police Presence at Columbia University Is Not ‘Counterproductive’

Columbia University’s recent decision not to involve the New York Police Department in handling protesters on campus has raised concerns. NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell expressed his disagreement with the university’s choice, stating that their reasoning was not accurate. Chell, speaking on Newsmax Sunday, emphasized that the NYPD’s handling of the situation on Thursday was flawless and ensured the safety of all individuals involved. Therefore, he believes that NYPD involvement would not be counterproductive.

In an email to the community, University President Minouche Shafik and other officials explained their decision, citing concerns about further escalation and the safety of the campus community. However, Chell mentioned that the NYPD is not actively involved in negotiations with the university and is ready to assist if needed.

Chell also acknowledged the presence of outside agitators in the protests and emphasized the importance of maintaining safety and order on campus. While supporting the right to protest, he emphasized that hate speech and criminal activities are unacceptable.

Overall, the NYPD is prepared to act if necessary but is awaiting a formal request from Columbia University. Chell reiterated the department’s commitment to serving and protecting the community.
