Office Romances in the United States: A Common Occurrence
After resigning from the Georgia election interference case against former President Donald Trump, former Fulton County special prosecutor Nathan Wade has broken his silence.
In March, Wade stepped away from the case following a public disqualification clash over his romantic relationship with District Attorney Fani Willis. Speaking on Sunday, Wade expressed some regrets about the situation.
“Workplace romances are as American as apple pie,” Wade told ABC News’ Linsey Davis. “It happens to everyone. But it happened to the two of us.”
When asked if he regretted the situation, Wade responded, “I regret that that private matter became the focal point of this very important prosecution. This is a very important case.”
“I hate that my personal life has begun to overshadow the true issues in the case,” he added.
Following Judge Scott McAfee’s ruling that either he or Willis must resign due to the “significant appearance of impropriety,” Wade stepped down from the case.
Both the district attorney and the special prosecutor testified that their relationship started in early 2022 and ended in the summer of 2023. Wade was hired in November 2021 to prosecute the case.
Trump and 14 co-defendants have pleaded not guilty in the case, while four defendants have taken plea deals.
Wade has since returned to private practice.
The former president and other defendants have petitioned the Georgia Court of Appeals to overturn McAfee’s ruling and seek the removal of Willis. The panel has not yet decided whether to take up the case.
No trial date has been set.
