Ohio House Ready to Consider Bill on Single-Sex Bathrooms

The Ohio House of Representatives may consider a bill next week that mandates separate single-sex bathrooms in public schools and universities in the state – one for biological males and one for biological females.

Last week, the House Higher Education Committee approved House Bill 183, known as The Protect All Students Act, with a vote of 10-5. State Rep. Adam Bird, R-New Richmond, emphasized that the legislation’s main goal is to safeguard students and ensure consistent policies across the state.

In addition to requiring single-sex bathrooms, the bill would also prevent biological females from sharing accommodations with biological males in educational service centers. State Rep. Beth Lear, R-Galena, stated that the legislation aims to protect children from exposure to the opposite sex in private spaces like restrooms, locker rooms, and overnight accommodations.

The House will convene on Wednesday for its next session.
