Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont has recently expressed his support for Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which aims to substantially reform and cut down on government spending.

“Elon Musk is correct. The Pentagon, with an enormous budget of $886 billion, has just failed its seventh consecutive audit. It has misplaced billions. Last year, only 13 senators opposed the Military Industrial Complex and a defense budget characterized by waste and fraud. This needs to change,” Sanders (I-Vt.) stated in an X post.

Former Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) welcomed Sanders into the initiative, highlighting a growing bipartisan effort for governmental downsizing.

“Welcome home, Bernie,” Gaetz remarked in an X post.

This unexpected alliance came after President-elect Donald Trump appointed Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy to lead DOGE, with the mission to “reduce excessive regulations, eliminate wasteful spending,” and streamline federal agencies.

“Together, these two remarkable Americans will lead my Administration’s efforts to dismantle bureaucratic government structures, cut unnecessary regulations, eliminate wasteful spending, and restructure Federal Agencies – which are essential to the ‘Save America’ initiative,” Trump proclaimed when announcing DOGE.

Despite planning to collaborate with Trump’s upcoming administration, DOGE will not function as an official governmental department; it will operate as an independent entity.

Sanders has historically criticized the federal defense budget, positing that these funds would be better utilized in social programs.

“Somehow, we constantly lack funding for health care, education, or housing, yet we perpetually have ample funds for a bloated and inefficient Defense Department that can’t even pass an independent audit. It’s time to amend our national priorities. NOW,” Bernie has previously stated.

Additionally, California Representative Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) has recently suggested that Democrats are prepared to collaborate with Musk and Ramaswamy to reduce the defense budget, highlighting issues of “waste, fraud, and abuse.”
