Video recordings captured the Cybertruck detonating around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, with the driver inside later confirmed deceased, as reported by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police and Clark County Fire Department officials.
“There is one deceased individual in the Cybertruck; I cannot determine their gender at this time,” stated Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
“Currently, we are exploring several leads, and I am not ready to disclose any further details. I can confirm that seven individuals are reporting injuries as a result of the explosion,” he continued, noting that the injuries are not severe.
“The situation involves a Cybertruck near Trump Hotel; there are numerous questions we need to address as the investigation proceeds,” he added.
Elon Musk, an ally of Trump and founder of Tesla, quickly reacted to the event, stating that it “appears likely to be an act of terrorism.”
Musk noted that the exploded Cybertruck was rented from “Turo,” the same service that previously supplied a rental truck to the deceased driver involved in the New Year’s Day attack in the French Quarter, raising questions about a potential connection between both incidents.
Musk further clarified that the explosion was not due to a vehicle malfunction.
“We have confirmed that the explosion resulted from large fireworks and/or a bomb located in the truck’s bed and is unrelated to the vehicle’s operation,” Musk remarked. “All vehicle telemetry was normal at the time of the explosion.”
Authorities have also indicated that they are treating the explosion as a possible act of terrorism, as reported by ABC News.
“This was not an explosion related to the lithium battery,” an unnamed official stated, according to ABC News.
The official further mentioned that the Cybertruck was carrying a payload of firework mortars, and investigations are underway to ascertain the motive.
In response, Eric Trump, the president-elect’s son, expressed gratitude towards first responders for their prompt action at the scene.
“Earlier today, there was a reported electric vehicle fire at Trump Las Vegas. The safety of our guests and staff is our utmost priority. We sincerely thank the Las Vegas Fire Department and local law enforcement for their swift and professional response,” Eric Trump commented.
