Democratic Senator John Fetterman has recently dispelled rumors regarding his departure from the Democrat party in favor of the Republicans.

Speculation over Fetterman’s (D-Pa.) potential switch in party allegiance arose after he mentioned he’s not “rooting against” Trump and expressed his support for the Republican-backed Laken Riley Act.
“If you’re rooting against the president, you are rooting against the nation,” Fetterman declared in December. “So country first. I know that’s become maybe like a cliché, but it happens to be true.”
The Laken Riley Act, which honors a 22-year-old woman who was tragically killed by an undocumented immigrant in Georgia last year, mandates the detention of undocumented immigrants accused of theft and other offenses.
“If you’re here illegally and you’re committing crimes, I don’t know why anybody thinks that it’s controversial, they all need to go,” Fetterman remarked on the Laken Riley Act.
Former Democratic Representative Jamel Holley (D-N.J.) fueled speculation about Fetterman’s possible exit from the party by stating, “Just left a conversation and my source indicated to me that a key Democratic senator is expected to change party affiliation to Republican by next week. Wow!”
Fetterman dismissed the rumors, stating, “That’s amateur hour s***.”
“If they believe it’s going to be like a Manchin or a Sinema situation, that’s just not accurate, and it’s not going to happen,” Fetterman expressed, alluding to former Senators from West Virginia and Arizona who left the Democratic party.
“It’s not going to happen,” he reiterated. “And even if I were tempted to do so, that would be a fast track to political irrelevance to try to switch. I would not be a very good Republican.”
While Fetterman has refuted claims of a party change, he has urged his colleagues to reconsider their strategies towards President Donald Trump.
“I’ve been advising folks to calm down,” Fetterman previously noted. “The constant panic isn’t productive; it’s essential to maintain composure because he hasn’t even assumed office yet.”
Additionally, Fetterman’s centrist stance led him to become the first sitting Democrat senator to meet with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate since Trump secured the presidency in 2024.
Fetterman visited Trump in January ahead of his inauguration, drawing criticism from some Democrats.
“President Trump invited me to meet, and I agreed. I represent all Pennsylvanians – not only the Democrats in Pennsylvania,” Fetterman asserted.
“I’ve been clear that no one can dictate my actions. I will engage with anyone willing to discuss matters that benefit Pennsylvania and the nation,” he added.
Despite Fetterman’s actions beyond party lines, he has privately assured his Democratic peers that his party affiliation will “not change.”
