Pastor Finds Beauty and Truth in Shen Yun

PORTLAND, Ore.—Although people have different faiths, there is always some common truth that can be found, and audience members saw that on Jan. 19 in Shen Yun Performing Arts.

Barbara Williams is a pastor, and she shared that although New York-based Shen Yun is not founded upon Christianity, she recognized the universal beauty and truth in the performance.

“What I love is the story. It tells both the past culture and current condition of China, which is sad. But I appreciate the truth that comes out. And I appreciate the heart of the people behind the performances. They are beautiful,” said Ms. Williams.

Shen Yun came to fruition in 2006 when artists worldwide joined hands in realizing their common goal of reviving traditional Chinese culture.

Ms. Williams expressed that she thought the artists were “Excellent. Their heart is in it. And I appreciate it all. I appreciate the stories behind the dance and the feeling that goes into it.”

When the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) came into power, Chinese culture was destroyed. Shen Yun is using art to raise awareness of the crimes that CCP has committed against humanity.

“I think it’s very important, because communism has attempted to extinguish Chinese culture as it attempts to extinguish culture around the world to impose—the squelching of all life, hope and beauty. And so I’m glad that you all are performing and doing this keeping it alive,” shared Ms. Williams.

One particular dance portrayed the story of Falun Gong practitioners being persecuted for their faith in China. They believe in the core principles of truth, compassion, and forbearance.

“Are those worthy to celebrate? Absolutely,” Ms. Williams said. “And the value for human life? Communism has no value for human life, so ancient Chinese culture, obviously [values human life].”

Chinese culture is deeply embedded with spirituality. In fact, even traditional Chinese attire is said to be inspired by the attire worn in the heavens, as the emcees’ share during the show.

It keeps alive Chinese culture and the beauty and the truth that Chinese culture has historically embraced.

“Would I recommend it? Yes,” said Ms. Williams. “It keeps alive Chinese culture and the beauty and the truth that Chinese culture has historically embraced. It’s beautiful. And there are certain qualities to be embraced and celebrated.”
