Patagonia’s Involvement in Funding Palestinian Terrorist Organizations: A Detailed Analysis

According to the Washington Examiner, Patagonia, the U.S.-based outdoor clothing retailer, has reportedly funneled tens of thousands of dollars to a progressive organization associated with Palestinian terror groups.

Tax records show that since 2016, Patagonia’s tax-exempt private foundation in California has donated over $139,000 to the Alliance for Global Justice (AFGJ), a group in Arizona with connections to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

Congress has scrutinized the relationship between AFGJ and PFLP, leading to donors and payment processors like PayPal cutting ties with AFGJ.

Patagonia stated that they are conducting an internal review of the funding, with Hans Cole, the company’s vice president of environmental activism, saying, “Patagonia remains committed to rigorous stewardship of our philanthropic efforts and is evaluating continued funding of local efforts through AFGJ.”

In 2023, Patagonia granted $30,000 to AFGJ for climate-related projects like “community cleanup around a defunct oil refinery site” and “building activism among Black TLGBQIA+ individuals through climate advocacy and community gardening.”

Despite AFGJ’s connections to terror groups, Patagonia’s publicly-available grant policies state that they do not support organizations promoting discrimination based on various factors.

With assets of $11 million, AFGJ supports 140 projects, including Samidoun, an Israeli-designated terror coalition. Marc Greendorfer, president of the Zachor Legal Institute, emphasized that Patagonia must not fund terrorism indirectly and needs to take immediate action.

The transparency issues surrounding fiscal sponsorship, which allows charities like AFGJ to manage projects without separate financial disclosures, have raised concerns. This arrangement is viewed as a “dark money” loophole by watchdog groups, making it difficult to track tax-exempt donations and potentially enabling Palestinian terror groups to fundraise in the U.S. through proxy groups.
