Peter Schweizer Tells Newsmax: TikTok Law is not About Free Speech
The congressional push urging TikTok to sever ties with its parent company and the Chinese Communist Party is not a matter of free speech but a “reasonable” concern, according to investigative author Peter Schweizer on Newsmax Sunday.
Schweizer, author of the best-selling “Blood Money: Why the Powerful Turn a Blind Eye While China Kills Americans,” shared on Newsmax’s “Sunday Agenda.” “This company Bytedance is intertwined with the Chinese state, conducting joint research on artificial intelligence with the Ministry of State Security, their intelligence arm.”
Chinese military and propaganda officials use the social media app as a “Trojan Horse” to influence young Westerners, Schweizer added.
“It’s a significant issue, and the request to ByteDance is simply to sell,” he emphasized. “It’s not a property seizure. We have restrictions on Chinese ownership in other sectors, such as technology and defense. The same principle should apply to media companies.”
While there are worries that Mark Zuckerberg might acquire TikTok, Schweizer believes the purchase would not be approved on antitrust grounds.
“He already owns major social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook,” Schweizer said. “The challenge is ensuring proper regulation and political oversight of social media platforms to safeguard young people.”
