Peter Yarrow, a prominent member of the legendary folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary, known for their musical influence in the 1960s, has unfortunately passed away at the age of 86.

A representative for Yarrow confirmed to the Guardian that he died on Tuesday after battling bladder cancer for four years.
“Our courageous dragon has grown weary and is concluding the remarkable journey of his life. While the world recognizes Peter Yarrow as a legendary folk activist, the individual behind the legend was equally generous, creative, passionate, playful, and wise, as reflected in his lyrics,” stated Yarrow’s daughter, Britney.
Before his passing, Yarrow’s children set up a “living tribute” webpage honoring their father, inviting friends and fans to share videos, photos, and messages in his memory.
The site also included updates shared by Yarrow’s family before his death. On January 3rd, Bethany shared the most recent news about their family’s Hanukkah celebration.
“Peter is currently very weak, yet his spirit remains strong and growing brighter each day,” Bethany expressed. “We will not let that light fade! We love you, Peter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Yarrow, along with Mary Travers and Paul Stookey, comprised one of the most celebrated folk bands in music history.
He co-wrote the band’s iconic song “Puff, the Magic Dragon” in 1963 with Lenny Lipton. From 1962 to 2004, Peter, Paul and Mary released thirteen albums and won five Grammy Awards out of 16 nominations.
After Travers’ passing in 2009, Yarrow and Stookey, both now 87, continued to perform as a duo.
During the historic March on Washington in August 1963, which saw a significant protest against the Vietnam War, Peter, Paul and Mary delivered a powerful rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” at the Lincoln Memorial.
One of the unfortunate events in Yarrow’s past occurred in 1969 when he was sentenced to three months in jail due to an incident involving a naked encounter with two young girls seeking his autograph. This incident marred his reputation, and he later expressed remorse, saying: “It was a time of real indiscretion among male performers. I was one of them and I was wrong. I apologize,” he stated according to AP News.
In 1981, Yarrow received a pardon from former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away recently on December 29th, 2024.
