Pinion and Hoffman Criticize NY Reparations as ‘Pandering’ for 2024 Election in Newsmax Interview

GOP strategists Joe Pinion and Jeanette Hoffman told Newsmax Wednesday that New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s new push for reparations for Black residents is all about “pandering” to a crucial Democrat voting bloc ahead of the 2024 election.

“To sit here and think that we’re going to have a blue-ribbon committee to talk about what a state like New York, which was never a slave state, owes Black people while they’re still failing Black people today as we speak — 600,000 people living in public housing, most of them who look like me, with lead in the drinking water, arsenic in the drinking water — and they continue to make excuses, where, if they were a private company, they’d all be in prison — it is a joke,” Pinion said during an appearance on Newsmax’s “American Agenda.”

“It should be laughed out of the building, except we have this left-wing establishment in the media that says, ‘Oh, look at this, this soft bigotry of low expectations. Let’s just come up with a number for a check that will never get printed and call it a job well done.'”

Hoffman pointed to the Rev. Al Sharpton’s presence at Hochul’s press conference announcing a reparations task force for the Empire State and said the event amounted to “pandering.”

“It’s pandering; it’s unworkable; it’s divisive,” Hoffman said. “Slavery was outlawed in 1862 in New York. No one alive today owned slaves in New York, and no one alive today was a slave in New York. Irish were discriminated against in New York; Italians were discriminated against in New York. Are they getting reparations? No, absolutely not.

“New York is following the state of California in being one of the most liberal states in the country. This is going to cost hundreds of billions of dollars. There’s a task force about this whole reparations thing. It’s not even going to happen. So this is complete pandering by Kathy Hochul. And it’s, as Joe said, not going to solve problems for anyone in the Black community in New York.”

Pinion chimed in on Hoffman’s point about the probability of reparations happening in New York, saying, “The check’s never going to get sent either.

“It’s simply a pandering exercise,” he said. “It’s simply for them to sit here and say, ‘Look, we care about Black people in an election year where we’re starting to figure out Black people have gotten tired of the orphan Annie promises of tomorrow, tomorrow, always a day away.’

“I think, again, if you’re going to focus on how you help Black people, let’s deal with the fact that our communities are less safe because you’ve defunded police,” he continued. “Let’s deal with the fact that people are getting roach-motel accommodations while people who have been here 24 hours are getting to live in the finest of thread counts. That is not New York; that is not America. But it’s certainly New York with these jokers running the show.”
