The White House criticized Amazon on Tuesday following the company’s announcement that it might display additional costs incurred from President Donald Trump’s tariffs on specific imported products.

Punchbowl News highlighted that Amazon is contemplating displaying the tariff-related cost alongside the product’s total listed price.
This announcement correlates with President Trump’s implementation of a general 10% tariff on goods from approximately 90 nations, with China facing a 145% tariff.
Leavitt described Amazon’s action as a “political and hostile maneuver,” mentioning that she had previously discussed the matter with President Trump.
“Why wasn’t this initiative taken by Amazon during Biden’s term when inflation surged to a 40-year high?” she added.
Reports suggest that President Trump reached out to Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos, to convince him against highlighting the costs associated with Trump’s tariffs on items sold on the platform, said senior White House sources.
“Naturally, he was upset,” one official conveyed to CNN regarding Trump’s sentiments. “Why should a billionaire company shift the burden onto consumers?”
On the other hand, Tim Doyle, a spokesman for Amazon’s cost-effective platform, Haul, clarified the situation.
“Our team evaluating the Amazon Haul store had considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products. However, this was never confirmed and will not happen,” Doyle elaborated.
President Trump’s reciprocal tariffs are designed to counteract tariffs imposed by other countries on U.S. goods, promoting domestic manufacturing to circumvent levies on imports.
These actions also aim to encourage nations to engage in negotiations to lower the tariffs they impose on U.S. products, leading to a more open trade environment overall.
Furthermore, Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins recently endorsed President Trump as the “ultimate deal maker” working to “hold China accountable.”
“The essential truth regarding China is: they rely on us more than we rely on them. They need our finances, our markets, and our consumers,” Rollins mentioned. “Historically, our agricultural goods have been taken advantage of.”
“The trade imbalance, alongside non-trade barriers exacerbating the tariff situations, is outrageous, whether it involves Argentina, China, Brazil, or the UK,” she added.
