Poll Shows Majority of Black Voters Against Banning TikTok, According to ClearPath Strategies
A recent poll obtained by The Hill reveals that a majority of Black voters are against legislation that would ban TikTok.
Conducted by ClearPath Strategies, the poll shows that 51% of Black voters oppose the ban, with 55% of them having a favorable view of TikTok. The Hill obtained this polling information from an internal memo by ClearPath Strategies.
Over the weekend, Congress passed a bipartisan bill, with a vote of 360-58, that would require TikTok’s Chinese owner ByteDance to divest its U.S. operations within nine months or face a ban. President Joe Biden has indicated that he would sign the bill into law if it passes the Senate.
TikTok has maintained that it does not share U.S. user data with the Chinese government and has argued that a ban would infringe on free speech rights protected by the First Amendment for the 170 million users of its app in the U.S.
In response to the legislation, the company informed employees that they would challenge it in court as soon as it is signed by Biden, citing it as a violation of the First Amendment, according to an email obtained by Reuters.
The poll also reveals that 24% of Black voters would be less inclined to support an elected official who backs a TikTok ban, and 77% prefer Congress to pass laws that ensure social media companies adhere to regulations safeguarding user data, as reported by The Hill.
Overall, 38% of registered voters use TikTok at least once a month, including 51% of Black voters, 57% of Latino voters, and 42% of liberal voters. Among Biden supporters, 39% use TikTok regularly, with 68% of voters aged 18-29, according to The Hill.
The poll, conducted from April 8-10 with 1,025 registered voters, highlights the sentiments of various demographic groups on the TikTok ban issue.
