The health of Pope Francis deteriorated on Friday following an “attack of bronchospasm,” which allegedly caused the Roman Catholic leader to “inhale vomit” as he continues his battle against double pneumonia.

Bronchospasm is characterized as a potentially dangerous condition that results in the narrowing of the air passages in the lungs.
This incident led to the Pope aspirating some of the vomit, prompting an immediate medical response before he was placed on mechanical ventilation.
The Vatican has reported that the Pope has responded positively to the mechanical ventilator and remained “alert and oriented at all times.”
Pope Francis has been in the hospital in Rome, Italy, since February 14th, battling double pneumonia, which has left him in a “critical condition.”
Since then, the Pope has made slight progress, though the bronchospasm incident has delayed his recovery as it caused a “sudden worsening of the respiratory condition.”
“As in recent days, the night passed peacefully, and the Pope is now resting,” the Vatican reported.
“Given the complexity of his clinical situation, further days of clinical stability are required to clarify the prognosis,” the Vatican explained. “We can say that we have moved past the most critical phase and are now faced with what has been described as a complex condition.”
Prior to the bronchospasm on Friday, the Vatican indicated that the Pope had spent the morning receiving supplemental oxygen and respiratory therapy, in addition to participating in a prayer session in the chapel.
In the meantime, Cardinal Angelo De Donatis, the Major Penitentiary since April 2024, is slated to preside over the Ash Wednesday ceremony on March 5th, while the Pope continues to rest and recover.
The Vatican cautioned that Pope Francis’s prognosis “remains uncertain.”
“The bulletin again speaks of a slight improvement, but the fact that the prognosis is reserved indicates that the doctors still have concerns.”
