In his traditional “Urbi et Orbi” (to the city and the world) Christmas address, Pope Francis emphasized the need for global peace and called for an end to ongoing conflicts.

On Wednesday, the 88-year-old pontiff delivered his message from the prominent balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican.
“May the sound of arms be silenced in war-torn Ukraine!” the pope declared. “May there be the bravery needed to initiate negotiations and actions of dialogue and connection, leading to a just and enduring peace.”
This year, the pope faced criticism from Ukrainian officials for suggesting that Ukraine should demonstrate the courage of the “white flag” to foster negotiations for peace with Russia.
In his speech, Francis also expressed a strong desire for a cease-fire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, urging for the release of hostages still held by the terrorist organization.
“I remember the Christian communities in Israel and Palestine, especially the beloved community in Gaza,” he remarked. “May there be a ceasefire, may the hostages be freed, and may aid be provided to those suffering from hunger and war.”
Pope Francis has held the papacy since 2013.
